This Week In 205 - 9/28 to 10/2

Goal of the Week: Students will be able to assess the intended and unintended consequences of the colonists’ actions against the British.

Monday 9/28 - Continue watching John Adams "Join or Die" and "Independence." Period 4 and 6, Read p 41-69 in "1776" and answer the questions below.

1. What was the length of service in these armies? Why was this drawback?
2. Describe the differences of opinion held by Washington and many of his officers from other states. In Washington's case what military training had he had? How much education? How did he personally regard the request that he lead the armies?
3. What did Washington originally want to do in Boston? Why did his Council discourage it? When did they decide against it?
4. Identify Henry Knox and describe his contribution.
5. Describe conditions by the end of December. What is the official name of the army; describe its flag.

Tuesday 9/29 - Political cartoons today, and their importance in the colonies. Analysis of "Boston Massacre" by Paul Revere. Finish your own political cartoons at home for homework. Cartoons can use the example of "The Boston Massacre" by Paul Revere, but must be originals done by you. Should be completed on an 8x11 sheet of white copy paper, and colored in with markers or crayons.

Wednesday 9/30 - "Acts" quiz, work on Colonial map. HW Period 4, 6 - Read p70-85 in "1776" and answer questions below.

1. Explain why it was so hard for either side to decide to occupy Dorchester Heights. Why was there indecision over whether to leave Boston for New York?
2. Why was Boston a difficult place to winter?
3. Explain Washington's desire for Boston and the opinion of his Council. How did they decide about Dorchester?

Thursday 10/1 - Primary source readings - Samuel Adams Committee of Correspondence letters and writings. In class, write a "committee of correspondence" letter to a friend in a different colony explaining the troubles in Boston prior to 1776. HW - Ch 4 Sec 2, Read p107-113 and answer q's # 1-4 p113. Finish letters if not finished in class.

Friday 10/2 - Cities of the Underworld: Freemasons. HW - Periods 4, 6 Read p85-112 in "1776"
